Who needs this?

Apple - iPod Photo

An iPod that shows photos. I honestly don't see the reason, apart from saying that they did it. Do people really need lightning quick access to their photo library? I guess maybe girls would like it more than guys, because they seem to be crazy about all things photographic.

I just don't personally see the need for such a device. My iPod stays in it's belt-clip and blasts out tunes while I walk to class. I can use it on a long flight across the country (and hopefully not lose it). It's used to keep me entertained on the go. I could even hook it up to my car if I wanted to spend the money on the necessary equipment. The point is, that during any of these situations, I would really be looking at the screen for very long. In fact, while walking or driving I can't look at the screen, for fear of bumping into somebody or crashing into a tree. Most of the time, I can't look at photos while I use my iPod. Photos only provide so much entertainment, and often serve to spark memories of better times. They require time to look at. You can just glace at them on the go.

The iPod photo lets you look at your pictures wherever, and you can even hook it up to a TV to do so. Excluding the fact that my TV has a media card viewer, so it can already do this without an iPod, I have a Powerbook that I can also hook up to a TV to display photos. Better yet, I can just look at them on the Powerbook.

The iPod photo is great, and has fantastic potential, but it's not realized. There are two things I can think of off the top of my head that would make it a fantastic product (as opposed to an iPod with a color screen that also happens to display photos). First, a camera. Cell phones have cameras now, why not iPod? It would be great to take a photo with my iPod (assuming it has a 3+ Megapixel camera) and then view it on the screen. I've got inkling that Apple probably has some sort of camera add-on planned for later; it just makes too much sense NOT to do it.

The other is Keynote, and also Powerpoint. Why can't this thing display business presentations? It seems like a genius idea to me. No more lugging a computer (or even a laptop) to the next business presentation you have to go to. The iPod Photo already has A/V hookups included. Plug those into a projector and start the Powerpoint show, simple as that. It could even be controlled via the iPod's simple controls, or possibly an IR or RF remote attachment.

Oh well, at least the Special Edition U2 iPod is shit hot.

Slashdot | Flying By Brain

Slashdot | Flying By Brain

So scientists, in my hometown no less, made a brain... and taught it to fly a plain. Talk about huge. I don't even think I can comprehend how big this could be in the future. It seems sort of dangerous.

Artificial intelligence is some scary stuff, or maybe I've just seen one too many science fiction movie. I'm not so sure I'd want to fly in a plane being piloted by a Petri dish. What if somebody got into the flight systems and somehow re-trained the "brain" to hijack the plane? Nobody would even be able to tell the plane was hijacked. Of course, there's always the possibility of being able to monitor the brain remotely and notice if anything was changed.

I don't know; it's just all too scary to think about. They just built SkyNet in Gainesville, Florida.

Let's see how long this lasts

All right, I'm off the livejournal. I'm tired of it. I'm going to keep it for the community features and to keep up with friends, but other than that it's all BlogSpot now. I'm tired of the whole LJ scene. I'll probably syndicate this on to LJ just so my friends can keep up with it.

The World Series is interesting. I don't watch baseball almost ever. I watched the Sox / Yankees playoffs, or at least some of them. I find myself liking the sport a little more. I think it's the past time of it all, and the fact that this whole "curse" thing could finally end for the Red Sox. Plus, my roommate is really into it, and is a huge Sox fan. The game's drawn out to an absurd level, but the fact that the pace is so different makes the sport almost refreshing to watch compared to every other sport's lightning quick pace. Plus, there's no hockey this year and I've got to watch something.
